Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in San Mateo public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Parks and Recreation Department operations and upcoming initiatives
San Mateo's Parks and Recreation Department is rolling out new playgrounds, searching for a restaurant operator at Poplar Creek, and planning the MLK Resiliency Center. A review of its senior programs, including the 'Get Around' transportation service, is also on deck.
Mariner's Island Bay Trail connection
A planned Bay Trail connection along Mariner's Island Boulevard is moving through the regional grant process, with a Complete Streets checklist review. It's a step toward better walking and biking access on the island's waterfront.
Lakeshore Park Basketball Courts Rebuild
The council will consider a $94,000 contract to replace the aging basketball courts at Lakeshore Park, with a $14,100 contingency.
Technology Lending Collection
A presentation on the library's tech lending program — devices residents can borrow for free. It's a resource that helps residents who lack home internet or laptops.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center Modernization and Resiliency Center
San Mateo's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center is slated for modernization, including a Resiliency Center component. Commissioners got an informational update on the improvements project — no vote was scheduled, so it's one to watch as plans develop.
Age Friendly Action Plan 2.0
San Mateo is a county leader in age-friendly work, with 32 businesses certified and 48 intergenerational game events held over two years. The coalition is now drafting Action Plan 2.0 with two new pilot projects — Neighbor to Neighbor and Let's Talk — and reviewing unmet goals from the 1986 senior master plan.
Downtown B Street Mural Maintenance
The beloved downtown pedestrian mural cost $200,000–$300,000, is the city's most popular public art piece, and was just resealed in July by the original artist. The city missed its original two-year resealing window and now has an ongoing maintenance plan including power washing.
Self-Guided Art Walks
The commission is considering creating one or more self-guided art walks — possibly three mini-walks given how spread out the city's art is — and even a scavenger-hunt style format to draw families and visitors downtown. Staff hope it will support downtown businesses and tie into Chamber of Commerce and downtown events.
Marina Branch Library Restoration Cost Overruns
The Marina Branch Library's foundation repair ran into unexpected problems with helical piles, plus furniture costs came in high — the council approved transferring $500,000 to finish the project.
Library Space Modification Survey
The City Librarian was scheduled to present results of a survey on modifying library spaces. The findings could shape how the Main Library's space is used in the future.
Poplar Creek Golf Tee Times and Closed Clubhouse
A golfer with hundreds of petition signatures complained that residents can't get tee times because VIP members get a 14-day booking window, and the clubhouse/restaurant has been closed for nearly two years. Staff said a new restaurant operator RFP goes out in September, with reopening targeted for early next year.
Upcoming civic arts work plan — murals, utility boxes, art walks
Staff previewed coming projects: mural guidelines for private property (nixed as a speech-regulating policy, reworked as guidelines), a utility box art program, interactive GIS art maps, art walks, and possibly an art center idea raised by a commissioner.
Get Around Program and East-Side Facility Equity
The senior ride program added a waitlist in July and cut rides from eight to four per month due to heavy use; staff will bring options back for commission review.
